dvd on tap: Devil In A Blue Dress [Carl Franklin]

Actor's Studio
Its L.A. in the late 40s, a time of big band jazz music and thin moustaches. Ezekiel 'Easy' Rawlins (Denzel Washington) is an unemployed black man looking for a few dollars to cover his monthly mortgage, when a strange man, DeWitt Albright (Tom Sizemore) offers him a job - to find a girl named Daphne Monet (Jennifer Beals). As soon as Easy accepts the job and the advance money (and without any prior detective experience), he's hit in all directions by bad circumstances - two murders that could be tied to him, getting arrested and roughed up by the cops, not to mention being confused by all red herrings popping up all over the place. He then has no choice but to call for backup - his trigger-happy pal Mouse Alexander (Don Cheadle). Together they unravel the mystery that uncovers a whole lot of dirty linen rooted in politics - and still survive. Adapted from a Walter Mosley book, This was director Franklin's first collaboration with Washington, and last year's Out of Time is definitely better and more faster-paced than this one, despite the sort of laid-back locales. But seeing Don and Denzel onscreen together is already quite a treat.

"ok ok, you win - you are the fastest son of a gun. ever. happy now?"
