cash calamari

i'm not a big fan of squid, but man, this movie is a lot more fun than X3, MI3 and Superman Returns (which i haven't seen yet, but i can make the assessment now) ... combined.

not to mention it banked another $62M on its 2nd weekend, upping its treasure chest to $258M. that's not even counting the take from business overseas. it already holds the title for best opening weekend ever (beating the first Spider-Man), and is on pace to break the original Pirates' total in less time.

and with that out-of-left-field-but-logical cliffhanger, i can't wait till 2007. this is how you do a sequel (in a trilogy)!

note: the guy playing Lord Cutler Beckett seemed familiar, and it bugged me the whole time. turns out its Tom Hollander, from one of the lesser-known movies i've seen and liked ... the very thought of you.

i still don't get it...

1. why does the east india company need davy jones' heart?

2. why did davy jones put his heart in a chest?

2. towards the end of the movie, when the crew was in that house in new orleans, why did the bad guy from the first movie show up?

1) the east india trading company doesn't need davy jones' heart. since everyone (except EITC) is after it anyway, it must be valuable, and so it becomes something valauable for norrington to bargain with, and regain his position in the British military. EITC needs the Sparrow's magic compass, and now if they have davy jones' heart, they could trade for other valuable stuff with whomever.

2) davy jones' symbolizes a lot of things about the sea - mostly he's just the devil taking sailors' souls when they drown. one of these myths was he lost his gelpren and in order not to feel the pain, he cut out his heart and put it in a chest, thus eliminating the weakness of feeling loooove. you kill the heart, DJ squidface dies. don't you remember JLA: A League of One?

3) first of all, that wasn't new orleans. second, i guess you can't dig the west-indian/jamaican accent. the witch said if the crew wanted to go to the ends of the earth and beyond to bring cap'n jack back, they needed a sailor/captain who knows how to travel in those oceans. who better than cap'n barbossa, who's already been dead since the last movie? if he's really dead or alive, we have to wait till 2007.
