what's the matter here?

74 people die, hundreds injured in gameshow stampede in Manila.

Stampede happened while people were waiting to get into popular gameshow "Wowowee" being held at a local Manila stadium. Said people were from the strata of society who dreamed of striking it rich instantly via prizes awarded in this gameshow. Sign of the times and desperation to risk life and limb, for one chance to win money and escape a lifetime of poverty?

This can be considered a freak accident (since such gameshows are the rage), not like overloading an ancient ferry to make the extra buck and watching it sink with all its passengers. But it is already a tragedy that people would only pin their hopes on get-rich-quick schemes.

From the Philippine Daily Inquirer:

"Oddly, though, the day's tragedy seemed to reveal something bizarre in the Filipino psyche: Instead of going home, thousands of 'Wowowee' fans who made it to the stadium before the stampede decided to stay put, holding on to their tickets and their seats, still hoping the show would go on.

By 1:30 p.m., comic host Willie Revillame, reduced to a sobbing, bowed figure, climbed the stage and apologized to the galleries and those watching from their homes."

I have no words.

Well, some.

Are we that pathetic?

Will we never again realize the meaning of 'hard work', and at the same time be in a position to reap the fruits of your labor?

Will Revillame still be the country's celebrity envoy for tourism?

desensitized na mga pinoy. biro mo daming mga patay nasa daan, nakapila pa rin yung mga buhay. hindi man lang natakot. mga walang paki. tsk tsk. sana bumangon mga patay tapos kinain yung mga nakapila.

The media is the biggest culprit in fostering a culture of mendicancy in the Pinoy. (Did you read about the 300+ people camped outside Manny Pacquiao's house waiting for a balato?)

They justify it as giving hope to the people. Bollocks.
